TRINITY AND AMBER BLACK
BATTLE WINGS AND KRYSTAL YHATE
Krystal Yhate looked with approval at the sleek dark bay form of Trinity. The daughter of The Immortal and All Smiles looked the picture of fantastic health. Energy and life glowed brightly within her eyes even as shyness softened her stance and made her seem more teddy bear than racehorse. She switched her gaze to the Boss, who was gravely tying her bootlaces and looked like professionalism incarnate. I'm happy that she's yours and not mine Amber. You've done a fantastic job with her and...I think you needed her, you know? Amber turned to Krystal, green eyes darkly serious as they bore into Krystal's soul. There's something up Krystal. Something weird is going on this season. Krystal pondered Amber's words, not brushing them off. There indeed was something going on with some of their best horses and nobody could seem to pin what it was. Tracks were being switched around, distances too, in the hope of finding that sweet spot that the horses were seemingly lacking.
She's still doing fine with you Amber. Just...try GHF more I guess. Try and get her off TW as much as possible. Which is actually pretty hard seeing as all the good races for juveniles are here. I'm loving the new schedule! Amber laughed, her face lighting up, and Krystal relished the site knowing that SOPS could be in for a long depression following the Wire Finish Cup if things didn't go as they should. Krystal shook her head, clearing her thoughts and turned around. There, meeting her gaze eye to eye, was the cold and indifferent Battle Wings who had rediscovered winning after the Breeders Cup. The Juvenile Fillies winner was the best contender for the Triple Tiara that SOPS had ever had. She was two for two this season and was absolutely relishing each and every race on the Tiara trail. Facing the fillies, Battle fought in the true way of her bloodline - all coldness and ice, all analytic silence on the track.
A sudden thought occurred to Krystal. You know Amber, Battle here broke her maiden in the Dirty Duck Stakes too...and now look at her. Amber turned suddenly, eyes sharp as she examined the Triple Tiara filly's condition and admired the musculature of the three year old. We'll see what happens then. She looks good she finally responded, a smirk on her face. She's holding her form well and should be great for the Forward Gal this week. The competition is coming to her and she's just beckoning them to come. Krystal laughed. In her own silent way of course. She paused. I hope that...that she'll be the one for us. Amber nodded, understanding Krystal's meaning. Only one way to find out. Let's get them out on the track. Mile gallop, two furlong workout, nothing big. Trin could use the intimidation factor. Krystal nodded, smirking. If there was one horse to force Trin out of her shell, it would be Battle Wings.
The two fillies made their way onto the Wire dirt. Battle Wings settled immediately, eyes sweeping the track that she so clearly preferred and instantly declaring her dominance with a tilt of the head and flick of the tail. At her side, the much shorter Trinity appeared to shrink into herself. She was a shy filly at the best of times, and a horse like Battle was difficult for her to be in the presence of. Amber remained calm as ever in the saddle, steering Trin to the rail and maintaining normalcy. Trin eventually relaxed as they began to canter side by side with the other mare and Amber maintained her calm. The juvenile was now picking up her pace, striding side by side with the older mare. Battle snorted and accelerated even more, her nostrils flaring as she dared Trin to try and share the lead with her again. Krystal smirked. Battle did not like to be messed with. Battle was the suicidal front runner that just kept on giving. She preferred the longer distances and excelled the most at them despite her running style. Kind of like her older sister War Cry, interestingly enough.
The pair swept through the first half mile at their canter and accelerated into the gallop. Now Battle truly staked her claim for the lead, her legs cutting through the air with precision as she commanded the rail and the lead with eased practice. Trin hunkered down two lengths behind them, wanting no part of the early speed and instead enjoying the run. Amber smiled and gently patted the petit bay filly. That was her style. Battle could have the lead all to herself if she wanted. They would come for her soon. Amber's eyes glued on Battle's backside and her mood flared. The past two races, they had had really rough rides coming from the back, and it had resulted in two lasts. Well, no more. Those inexperienced juveniles would be hard pressed to outdo the riding of Amber Black this time around, and Trin was due for some more success. She counted down the furlongs as they went along, and smirked as they hit the two furlong ending sprint. It was time to go.
Krystal let Battle Wings go and relished the feel of controlled power that spilled out of Battle as she roared into a new pace. This was a filly who was coming even more into her own and would only continue to get better. She whooped as they raced along, glanced under her elbow and blinked to find Trinity a length and a half from them and pouring it on. Trinity was running her heart out under the imploring of Amber Black. The petit bay was gaining on them now, determination to please her rider lightning up her eyes. She had running room this time and she was taking it. There was nothing hindering her flight, and now the deadly force of Trinity was unveiled for the world to see. Krystal smirked. She and Battle loved the challenge. She turned, urged Battle and felt the bay filly unlock another gear. They pulled away, pouring on the speed, and Krystal smirked as they soared under the wire, well in hand and feeling fantastic.
Trinity kept going right to the wire, always trying and kicking defeat in the face. Amber Black smiled broadly as she slowed Trin down. Here was a filly who could make her cry with her unstoppable determination and amazing amount of heart. A filly she'd be more than happy to partner with for the rest of her career. She and Krystal slapped high fives, both smiling and pleased with the workout that had just taken place. It was time to take the battle back to the racetrack and prove that Trinity and Battle Wings were tough contenders, ready to go.
